Ghana striker Junior Agogo has been hit with some bad news as a serious knee injury wrecked his chances of appearing at the World Cup in June.
The 30-year-old, who plays for Cypriot side Apollon Limassol, had his World Cup dreams dashed when he underwent knee reconstruction surgery which will sideline him for six months.
This means he will not be fit for the World Cup that starts in South Africa in just over a month.
“We can confirm that Junior Agogo has been ruled out of action for six months,” Apollon Limassol spokesperson Electra Katsikidi told Ghanasoccernet.com.
“He had an operation on his left knee here in Cyprus on Friday and doctors have now confirmed that the operation was successful.
“But he will now sit out for six months to fully recover and return to training for us.”
Agogo was in fine form before he damaged his left knee while in action for Appollon, and was hoping for a place in the Ghana World Cup squad.
A friend of the striker told Ghanasoccernet: “When we found out about the latest injury he was totally gutted, devastated in fact.
“Things were going really well for him since the start of the year in Cyprus where he has made huge waves.
“The team were flying and his form was good and was hoping that he will be called for the World Cup camp to play for his country.
“Now all he has got to do is to call his friends in the Black Stars to tell them of the bad news and wish the country and the players well for the tournament.”
Agogo is considered one of Ghana’s most prolific active goal scorer – and has netted 11 goals in his first 25 matches for the national team.
He did not play for Ghana during their Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Angolan but was making a strong case for a call-up with a series of fine performances for Appollon.
His absence means coach Milovan Rajevac will have to choose his World Cup strikers from the likes of Asamoah Gyan, Matthew Amoah, Prince Tagoe, Dominic Adiyiah Eric Bekoe and in-form Serbia-based Yaw Antwi.
