The Energy Commission says an expansion of the LPG gas storage facility in the country is needed to forestall the intermittent shortages. Domestic consumption of LPG is estimated to be about 5000 metric tonnes every week, just 1000 metric tonnes shy of the storage capacity of the Bulk Oil and Storage depot, BOST. According to the Executive Secretary of the Commission Ofosu Ahenkorah, the inadequate buffer means any glitch in the supply of the product negatively impacts on the market. The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) is presently taking delivery of some 5,000 metric tonnes of LPG expected to ease the current acute shortage that has persisted for some weeks now. He said the expansion has become even more important as the country is expected to start producing gas very soon. “There is occasional shortage of gas because we’ve almost hit the limit the gas storage capacity in the country. The option right now is to expand the storage capacities so that we can get more deliveries,” he said. Mr. Ahenkorah however says private individuals interested in setting up LPG storage depots are also welcome. Meanwhile, TOR says it will begin dispatching gas to the market by the close of day today.
