A circuit court in Kumasi has sentenced a 35-year-old student of the University of Cape Coast, to two years imprisonment in hard labour, for swindling a farmer of GH¢10,100.00 under the pretext of selling to him, a vehicle.
John Priestly Badu denied the offence.
Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour-Kyei told the Court presided over by Mr. Justice Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey that the farmer, Kofi Appiah Baafi resides at Abrepo, in Kumasi, whilst the convict stays at Asamankese in the Eastern Region.
The Prosecution said in March last year, the complainant, who wanted to buy a vehicle, was introduced to Badu by Emelia Aboagyewaah.
Chief Insp. Baffour-Kyei said Badu promised to assist the complainant acquire a car at GH¢7,200.00 and collected GH¢10,100.00. from Baafi.
The Prosecution said that Badu informed the complainant that he was through with the transaction and he (Baafi) should meet him (Badu) at a spot in Accra.
Chief Insp. Baffour-Kyei said that Baafi went to Accra with a driver to meet Badu but he did not turn up.
The Prosecution said the complainant spotted the convict at Asamankese and caused his arrest.
Badu in his caution statement admitted taking the money but said he gave it to Abubakar Mohammed, who absconded with the money.
