A nationwide exercise to check the sale of adulterated fuel and clamp down on fuel stations that have tampered with their fuel pumps begins in Accra Friday.
The exercise, which is being spearheaded by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), follows complaints about poor service delivery and the sale by service stations of premix fuel as petrol to customers.
The Public Relations Officer of the NPA, Mr Yaro Kasambata, told the Daily Graphic in an interview that it was an offence for fuel service stations to pump fuel for sale to customers below the required litre.
Equally, the sale of premix fuel as petrol to customers was a criminal act which would not be countenanced by the NPA, he noted.
Mr Kasambata said the NPA would be compelled to close down fuel service stations which pumped less than the required amount of fuel or sold premix fuel as petrol to customers.
He said during the inspection, the team would find out about the standard of the various fuel service stations "to ensure that they are within the confines of the NPA requirement".
He said the inspection team would seek general information on capacity regulatory requirement, storage vessel, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) permit, Ghana Standards Board measuring calibration and quality of fuel, adding that affected stations which had their pumps re-calibrated would be allowed to start operations.
However, if the fuel service stations persisted in under-delivering fuel to customers, the NPA would be forced to prosecute them in the courts, he emphasised.
