Sachet water producers have suggested a tax on imports of polythene granules used in the production of plastic. According to them, funds from such a tax could be dedicated to financing management of the filth generated from their products. Used sachet water rubbers, especially because of the indiscriminate manner consumers dispose them off, contribute to most of the filth created in the city. The National Coordinating Council of Sachet Water Producers therefore believes their suggestion of the tax demonstrates leadership in the management of the filth their products generate. The president of the Union of Sachet Water Producers, Magnus Nunoo, tells Joy Business their proposal for a one per cent tax has been forwarded to the Ministry of Finance for consideration. “We believe that to get the things going very well, there is the need for us to have regular flow of funds and I believe the only way we can rope in a lot is possibly to impose tax at the point of entry,” he said. The proposal of the tax however appears to be a compromise brokered between the sachet water producers and government after it decided to scrap the 20 percent ad valorem tax on sachet water due to public outcry. Government had argued strongly for the tax as a sort of environment tax to finance management of plastic waste. Joy Business has learnt government had indicated to the producers it may have to ban sachet water if a solution is not found to the waste management issue. Source: Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
