Soccabet a sports betting company in the country has been launched at a short but impressive ceremony in Accra, over the weekend.
Established in less than eight months, Soccerbet has created some 720 jobs with 46 branches across the capital, Chief Executive Officer of the company Gungoran Arslan said.
According to him, the company does not only provide opportunity for many soccer lovers to watch their favorite football teams but also the chance to predict the right scores for the various fixtures and win handsome monetary rewards.
He said the company will create over 1,200 jobs in the next two months as it undertakes a major expansion project across the country.
Soccabet is no doubt the "game changer" in the industry Arsland stated, and promised to abide by the rules governing the Ghana Gaming Commission.
He cited under age betting as one of the serious offences the company frowns upon and takes measures to avoid it.
The IT Manager of the company, Ernest Ativor said Soccerbet has made it possible, through the use of mobile phones, for patrons to place a bet in the comfort of their homes.
With over 3,000 matches available especially on weekends, Ativor said they have made arrangements with five of the major mobile financial institutions for patrons to be able to place their bets and win fantastic monetary rewards.
The Gaming Commissioner, Emmanuel Quaynoo berated the police and Municipal Chief Executives for illegally closing down some sports betting outlets without the express authority of the Commission.
He said some of the outlets have gone through the necessary procedures to acquire the license which makes it illegal for any other institution to close them down.
"Gaming Commission is the only institution with the power to close down sports betting institutions," he said.
He also sent signals the Commission will go after other competitions including the Milo Marathon, and other beauty pageants for illegally organising those competitions.
According to him, any competition that promises rewards to people must be cleared by the Gaming Commission.
He said sports betting has grown in the last six years when it was first introduced into the country. Business men from Nigeria and South Africa have since come to learn the processes involved to establish same in the various countries, he noted.
He is optimistic Soccabet will abide by the rules of the Commission, especially, the one that prevents children from betting.
Together with some of Ghana's soccer greats, including Sam Johnson and Laryea Kingston, the Gaming Commissioner declared Soccerbet duly launched.
