The first Media Car Racing Championship would be held at the La Trade Fair Centre in Accra on Friday, April 2.
About 50 Media Houses throughout the country are expected to participate in the two-day event.
Mr Ismail Lamptey, Chief Executive Officer of Formula One Islant Limited, who disclosed this to GNA Sports in Accra on Saturday, said the event dubbed "Formula One Log on 2010 Media Go-Kart Competition" was aimed at creating awareness about the safety of car racing and to also promote car racing as an important sports discipline in the country.
He said since the media plays a very important role in the education of the people and also have a lot of influence on the people they must be used as channel to promote the sport and also promote road safety.
"A lot of people think that car racing is a very dangerous sport and also meant for the whites only," he said, adding that his company believes that the media can help the people to understand and participate in the sport.
Mr Lamptey said there are plans to organise inter-regional competitions and a four-nation tournaments later in the year and called on corporate bodies to support the programme and development of the sport.
Mr Worlanyo Agrah, Chief Executive Officer of the National Sports Council underscored the important role the media play in the socio-economic development of the country and pledged the support of the Council in the development of the sport.
