Mathieu Flamini played the unlikely hero as Arsenal defeated Tottenham 2-1 in a North London Derby in the third round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday.
Arsenal took the lead in the 26th minute to silence the White Hart Lane faithful.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain unleashed a shot from 20 yards out which Michel Vorm failed to hold, only succeeding in scooping the ball into the path of Flamini, who fired into the roof of the net from six yards out.
Harry Kane thought he had levelled four minutes after half-time, but his goal was correctly ruled out for offside.
The leveller did finally come in the 56th minute. Nacer Chadli tried to fire a ball across the six yard box, and Calum Chambers stuck out a toe and sent it past David Ospina.
And amazingly it was Flamini who scored again in the 77th minute, firing a wonderful volley from the edge of the area.
Adam Bogdan saved Liverpool's blushes as they beat Carlisle on penalties in the League Cup third round clash at Anfield.
The Reds had 47 shots on goal but scored just once as the match progressed through extra time.
Under-pressure manager Brendan Rodgers, heavily tipped for the sack in recent days, narrowly avoided watching one of the worst defeats of his career as both sides missed twice in the first four penalties - though not Emre Can, who scored with a nerveless Panenka effort that almost went over the bar.
Liverpool's goalscorer Danny Ings then scored his side's fifth penalty, and when Bogdan dived the right way once more to meet Bastien Hery's spot kick, the Reds earned a spot in the fourth round.
Once again they will play at Anfield, this time against Bournemouth during the week beginning October 26th.
On this evidence, however, Liverpool may well host the Cherries with a new manager at the helm.
Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial both scored as Manchester United saw off Ipswich Town 3-0.
Rooney controlled a pass at the top of the 18-yard box and shrugged off a defender's challenge before scoring at the near post in the 23rd minute.
Andreas Pereira doubled United's advantage with a goal on the hour mark, before new Old Trafford hero Anthony Martial continued his scoring streak in stoppage time by calmly side-footing the ball beyond the keeper from 15 yards.
Brazilians Kenedy and Ramires each had a goal and an assist to help Chelsea beat League One side Walsall 4-1.
New signing Kenedy crossed for his countryman Ramires to head home in the 10th minute.
Ramires then played in Loic Remy to score in the 41st minute, though James O'Connor got one back for the hosts just before half-time.
Remy played Kenedy through in the second half for the 19-year-old to score his first Chelsea goal.
Pedro scored in stoppage time to cap the scoring.
Newcastle were knocked out of the competition with a 1-0 defeat at home against Sheffield Wednesday.
Lewis McGugan scored for the Championship side in the 76th minute as Newcastle lost their fourth straight game.
Jay Rodriguez, Sadio Mane and Shane Long each scored twice as Southampton cruised past MK Dons 6-0.
Rodiguez provided an early lead sand Mane scored twice to give the Saints a big cushion by the 25th minute.
Rodriguez opened the second half with a penalty, and Long then found the net twice in an eight-minute span.
Norwich City ousted fellow Premier League side West Brom with a 3-0 win at Carrow Road.
Matt Jarvis opened the scoring in the 62nd minute, before Kyle Laffery scored late on and a Sebastien Pocognoli own goal added to the Baggies' misery.
Dwight Gayle scored a hat trick as Crystal Palace beat Charlton Athletic 4-1.
The Championship side held Palace goalless until the break, but Fraizer Campbell scored shortly afterward.
Gayle then scored his first of two penalties, but it was soon cancelled out by Mouhamadou-Naby Sarr's strike for the visitors.
Alou Diarra was then sent off for taking down Patrick Bamford in the box, and Gayle scored the resulting spot-kick, before finally scoring from open play in the 86th minute.
