The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has raised an alert about the activities of a syndicate that is issuing fake operating licenses.
Members of the syndicate are allegedly parading themselves as officers of the NPA, issuing fake licenses to unsuspecting people interested in operating fuel stations.
The suspected fraudsters have succeeded in duping some entities of substantial amounts.
Public Relations Officer of the NPA Yaro Kasambata tells Joy News the inspectorate division is liaising with the security agencies to clamp down on the syndicate.
According to him, whilst the authority’s licenses come in the form of booklets those of syndicate are leaflets.
“And they are actually taking advantage of other smaller retail outlets that are not also licensed. We haven’t yet been able to determine the extent of the spread. They have actually succeeded in duping some people. That is quite substantial,” he told Joy News.
Officials say the problem becomes even critical as the country begins commercial production of oil later this year.
