Rocky Marciano’s son unimpressed with Floyd Mayweather

The son of heavyweight boxing legend Rocky Marciano was not particularly impressed with Floyd Mayweather Jr. even after the American superstar matched his father's 49-0 win-loss record.

Mayweather on Saturday easily routed Andre Berto, winning via unanimous decision in what he claimed will be his final fight. The American tied Marciano's 49-0 win-loss record, set in 1955.

Rocky Marciano Jr., speaking to USA Today, said he would have been more impressed had Mayweather been fighting at a heavier weight class.

"I suppose I would be more impressed. I think my father's record is a difficult record to achieve in the heavyweight class," Marciano Jr. said. "In boxing history, we've seen (boxers in) lighter weight classes go deep before losses."

Mayweather fought at super featherweight when he began his career and went to as high as light middleweight, but was at welterweight when he retired.

"The weight matters in my opinion, and also in others' opinions," Marciano Jr. said.

He also doubts Mayweather will stop at 49-0, despite the boxer's repeated insistence that he is ready to walk away from the sport that made him the highest-paid athlete in the world.

"It's difficult to believe this is his last fight," Marciano Jr. told USA Today.

Marciano (above, pictured) fought professionally from 1947 to 1955, winning all 49 of his fights – 43 via knockout. He last fought on September 21, 1955, knocking out Archie Moore.
