Wayne Rooney surpassed Charlton as England's all-time leading scorer on Tuesday - but reckons three of his teammates could challenge his record.
Now, he has revealed the three players he believes can challenge the feat - and one of them is Manchester United target Harry Kane. The striker became the Three Lions’ all-time leading marksman when he netted his 50th goal for his country in the 2-0 win against Switzerland.
After seeing his 45-year record fall, Sir Bobby Charlton claimed Rooney could set a target that will last for years.
But the 29-year-old was quick to name three of England’s emerging stars as players with the potential to surpass his total.
He believes Tottenham striker Kane, along with Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling and Everton’s Ross Barkley can all challenge him.
Kane scored his third goal in four games for England against Switzerland, before Rooney reached his landmark.
Rooney said: “This is such a huge moment for myself and my family in my career. Hopefully for the team and for myself there will be a lot more to come.
“We can be successful and hopefully a lot of the younger lads - Harry coming through, Ross, Raheem, can come close and even pass me in the future.”
If any of that trio are to overtake Rooney, they are likely to have go well past the 50-goal mark.
England manager Roy Hodgson believes his captain has years to add to his total.
