Two teenagers in Kumasi have been arrested by the police for stealing fish from fish ponds belonging to Kumah Farms at Anwomaso Domeabra in the Ashanti Region.
Nana Kwaku Siaw, the 2004 Second National Best Farmer and owner of Kumah Farms, told The Mirror that the teenagers and an elderly person were spotted fishing in the ponds with hooks on January 23, 2010.
He said the elderly person managed to escape but the two teenagers were apprehended and handed over to the police at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Police Station.
He said the two, Alexander Duah, 16, and Isaac Amoako, 15, told the police that others were also involved in the pilfering and that they sent the fish to some people who in turn sold it to market women.
When contacted, the police at KNUST confirmed the case and said investigations were underway.
They boys, however, have been granted bail.
Kumah Farms has exhibited a successful story of fish farming in the Ashanti Region since it started operations in 1999, but within the last two years the managers have been recording low harvests due to pilfering.
Nana Siaw said the farms used to harvest three tonnes of fish but due to pilfering they had been harvesting about 120 kilogrammes.
The farms have been providing fingerlings as well as training, for fish farmers.
