Four unidentified assailants attacked traders on Garu Tempane road, killed one Mamprusi and severely injured another in what the police say is an armed robbery expedition.
The traders were travelling from Bawku to Gushiegu.
Chief Superintendent Kwaku Boadu Peprah, Bawku Divisional Police Commander, who confirmed the incident to Joy FM on Saturday, said the murderers left behind two unregistered motorbikes.
He said the assailants attacked the traders in the middle of their journey, and ordered all on board a bus to come out where they were asked to group according to tribe.
Having identified the two as Mamprusis, the attackers shot and killed one and wounded the other severely in the process. The assailants fled with thousands of Ghana cedis and some belongings of the other passengers.
Chief Superintendent Kwaku Boadu Peprah said the body of the victim has been sent to the morgue.
Meanwhile some people have discounted any robbery motive with the backdrop of segregation into tribes before the two were shot.
However, the Bawku Naba told Joy News investigations by his outfit revealed that the shooting is not related to the protracted conflict between Kusasis and Mamprusis in Bawku.
