Suspected child traffickers in Winneba have threatened to kill the head of a human rights campaign group working to end trafficking in the Central Region.
The executive director of NGO Challenging Heights, James Kofi Annan, says he has received several death threats following the prosecution and conviction of a child trafficker in Winneba.
He told Joy News some fishermen in the area have also tried to assault him, at least on three occasions.
“They say they would kill me and wide away my family,” Mr Annan said.
Mr. Annan sought for the conviction of a child trafficker who had sold two children into slavery.
According to him, the traffickers had agreed with the mother of the two children to send the children away for only two years.
However, the child trafficker would not release the two children after the second year.
Child trafficking has been going on in the region for years and has been disguised by perpetrators as child training, where the children are supposed to be taught new trades.
But human rights advocates say several hundreds of these children are instead exposed to severe, life-threatening hazards.
Mr. Annan's concerns are currently being investigated by the Winneba police. Attempts are also being made to establish the identity of those whose sent the life-threatening messages, Detective Inspector Victor Dakey told Joy News.
