Former Chief of Defense Staff, Lt General JB Dankwa; former presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Ghana, Most Rev. Dr. Samuel Asante Antwi; and the Managing Director, Capital View Hotel in Koforidua Mr. Kingsley Dwumoh amongst others, have led a demonstration against mining at Moseaso in the Atiwa District of the Eastern Region.
The leaders, who hail from Moseaso said they do not want Kakoase Extraction Ventures, a legally registered small-scale mining, to mine in the area.
According to the demonstrators, Kakoase Extraction Ventures did not notify the Moseaso community before extracting gold in the area, and accused the firm of destroying farm lands and sources of drinking water - Kokomene and Agyapansu streams.
The demonstration started from Moseaso Lorry park through Kwabeng Junction on the main Accra-Kumasi Highway and back to the Moseaso township with placards some of which read, CORRUPT PUBLIC OFFICIALS + GREEDY CHIEFS=ABSOLUTE POVERTY; GREEDY LEADERS GO AWAY AND LEAVE US IN PEACE; FORGED MOU DESTROYING FARM LANDS, RIVERS; PLEASE THINK TWICE; THE PEOPLE MATTER MORE THAN GOLD; AKYEMKWAA A ONOM AT3KY3.
Managing Director of Capital View Hotel, Mr. Kingsley Dwumoh claimed that due to the activities of the mining firm, residents now rely on sachet water to cook, bathe and drink.
He said, leaders of the demonstration have written to all the necessary authorities but to no avail. He said since no action has been taken by government, the people of Moseaso will protect their properties.
Former Chief of Defense Staff, Lt Gen JB Dankwa, and the former Presiding Bishop of Methodist Church of Ghana, Most Rev. Samuel Asante Antwi said even though Kokoase Extraction Ventures is legally registered, they will not allow it to operate in the area.
They explained that the firm failed to do wide consultation and has not been able to carry out any project as part of their corporate social responsibility for the people of Mosease.
They also accused Kakoase of employing galamsey methods of extracting gold which has destroyed the environment.
However, when contacted, owner of Kakoase Ventures, Nana Antwi denied the claims by the demonstrators and provided a copy of what is supposed to be a Memorandum of Understanding between the mining company and the traditional leaders of Moseaso. It was signed by Nana Asiedu Amoako the Krontihene and Nana Adutwumwaa Serwaa, the Queen mother of Moseaso.
It was stated in the Memorandum of Understanding that an amount of GHc 35, 000 be allocated to the town as social responsibility fund for developmental projects.
He also refuted claims that his mining activities have destroyed water bodies at Moseaso.
Nana Antwi who is also the lawyer for Small Scale Miners Association of Ghana took some journalists on a tour to the mine sit to have a firsthand information on his company's operations
