Some police officers who arrested a man accused of stealing, allegedly chose an unconventional method to squeeze the "truth" out of the suspect. Two officers from the Police Buffalo Unit in Kumasi effected the arrest of Stephen Osei-Owusu who is a Ghanaian resident in the United Kingdom on New Year’s Day on suspicion of stealing $3,000 and GH¢500 at Nhyiaso. The two officers, whose names were given as Danso and Agyei, allegedly took the suspect to shrines at Ejisu to establish his guilt. Mr Osei-Owusu is threatening legal action against the Inspector General of Police and the force’s command in Kumasi for alleged violation of his human rights. Mr. Osei Owusu is peeved by the ordeal and is now demanding to know why he was not taken to the police station instead. He said he visited his cousin who lives with the alleged complainant – whose name was given only as Kwame – at about 8:00 pm. But just about the time he wanted to leave, his landlord told him the said amounts were missing. Police were called in and a security man in the house was detained and as Osei decided to move out, he was called back and sent with two others to the shrine. At the shrine, the fetish priest asked all of them, including the police personnel, to pull out an object the police had set up. When all but he managed to pull the object, the policemen declared Osei-Owusu a thief. Mr Osei-Owusu said the police beat him and threw him into cells after they had thoroughly searched his house and found nothing. Mr Osei-Owusu has been invited by the police for further investigation into the issue, sources said. Story by Elton John Brobbey/Luv FM/Ghana *Fiifi Koomson contributed reporting
