Drama unfolded at the Agona Swedru District Court, presided over by Mr E.K. Sunu, when a suspect, Kojo Mensah, who was awaiting prosecution for a yet-to-be named crime, jumped through a window in a failed bid to flee from the long arm of the law.
Mensah, a carrier, was, however, chased, nabbed and referred to the circuit court to face the music.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge of escaping from lawful custody, prompting the presiding judge, Mr N.K.E. Osam, to remand him in prison custody until January 4, 2010.
The Judicial Police Officer (JUPOL), Superintendent Raymond A. Martey, told the court that on December 17, 2.009, Mensah was escorted to the district court and he sat among other suspects awaiting trial.
Mensah, who was to face the offence of unlawful entry, suddenly jumped through one of the windows and fled out of the court premises.
He was, however, chased and arrested some metres away by the court warrant officer and others who brought him back to the court room.
Mr Sunu referred Mensah's case to be dealt with at a higher court.
Hardly had Mensah walked out of the dock when he was called back to face the substantive charge of unlawful entry to which he pleaded not liable.
Supt. Martey stated that the complainant, one James Lawrence Donkor, a teacher, had been experiencing theft of his personal effects. Then about 11p.m. on December 5, 2009, Donkor was returning home from an outing when he spotted Mensah standing behind his (Donkor's) window.
Mr Martey said Donkor confronted Mensah as to what he was doing there at that hour but Mensah could not give any tangible reason, prompting Donkor to apprehend him with the help of some sympathizers and hand him over to the police.
