Police beat retreat, stand by Graphic story

The Police Administration has described the Daily Graphic story of December 11, 2009 on the Kinapharma issue as accurate. "We therefore, stand by the newspaper in so far as the accuracy of the story is concerned," it said. A statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, DSP Kwesi Ofori, and issued in Accra Wednesday said the story, as recounted by the newspaper, was accurate, except for the number of suspects taken into custody by the police. "Though the information on the Kinapharma issue passed on to the Daily Graphic did not come from official police source, the police would want to reiterate emphatically that but for the small aspect stated in the opening paragraph of this letter, the story was accurate," it stressed. The statement said it was in that vein that the Police Administration believed that the story could have been clarified with the Public Affairs Directorate, as has been the situation in most cases between the two institutions. "The Police Service and the Graphic Communications Group have had a long-standing healthy relationship built on mutual trust and understanding and this incident, which is inevitable in all such relationships, should not see us draw daggers at each other,” it said. It said while the Police held in high esteem the virtues of integrity and trustworthiness, it appreciated the credibility and pedigree of the Graphic Communications Group Ltd in the media landscape. "The Police would, therefore, not do anything to detract from the huge reputation that the company has built over the years," it added. This appears to be a backtracking as the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department of the Police Service, DCOP Frank Adu-Poku had denied the story. He was justifying the police service’s decision not to render an apology demanded by the pharmaceutical giant, Kinapharma following a botched cocaine bust at the company’s ware house. The company demanded an apology from the police for leaking a story about their dealing in cocaine when tests were yet to be concluded. Tests conducted on precursor susbtances (used for manufacturing drugs) suspected by the police to be cocaine proved negative after two officials of the company were detained in connection with the substance. The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana is also meeting on the matter following the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI’s) call for investigation into the matter.
