Investigations into the operations of the Metro Mass Transit (MMT) would still go ahead despite the resignation of its chairman, Dr. Ato Quarshie, the Minister of Transport, Mike Hammah has said. Dr Quarshie was cited in the infamous Mabey and Johnson bribery case. On September 25, this year, a London court convicted officials of Mabey and Johnson for paying bribes to Ghanaian government officials for the award of road contracts in Ghana in the 1990s. The Minister of Transport in the first week of September set up a seven-member committee, among other issues, to review the mode of acquisition of Yaxing buses from China for the MMT and to review the current operations of the company. However, the Daily Dispatch newspaper said it sighted a letter addressed to the Minister of Transport from Dr. Quarshie resigning his position as chairman of the Committee. “Following the allegations made against me in the Mabey and Johnson issue, I would like to resign my Chairmanship of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on the Metro Mass Transit Company,” the letter stated in part. Meanwhile, Mr Mike Hammah, Minister of Transport, told Joy News that his resignation will not affect the work of the Committee. The Minister met the new chairman on Tuesday and said the Committee is expected to finish its work in a few weeks. Story by Isaac Essel/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
