The Awutu Breku District Magistrate’s Court has imposed a total fine of 139 million cedis on 236 drivers, who appeared before it between January and December 2006 for various traffic offences.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Michael Roland Nyaaba of the Kasoa Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police said that 30 people were killed and 283 got injured in 329 road accidents that were recorded in area during the period.
He described 29 of the accidents as fatal; 117 as serious and 183 as minor.
ASP Nyaaba said 197 drivers were fined 69.7 million cedis for road traffic offences while 49 drivers were fined 69.3 million cedis for being involved in accidents.
ASP Nyaaba said the offences centred on the use of dangerous vehicles, use of motor vehicles without licences, failure to renew roadworthiness certificates and overloading.
