The legitimacy of Asamoah Gyan as Black Stars captain, a position he has occupied since October 2012, is being questioned by Abbey Pobee and Appiah Stadium.
But in the intervening three years, the growing number of scandals that have hit him must force Ghanaians to take the armband from him, according to two two popular pundits.
Abbey Pobee, a football administrator and popular analyst, has believes that the Ghana FA must look into the latest claims to hit the skipper and then, if need be, strip him.
Speaking to Joy Sports on Friday, Pobee said: “The FA should investigate these issues and if Gyan is guilty he should be stripped off the captaincy. He should be invited to the ethics committee of the FA and answer some questions”.
In the past few days, a 22-year old lady has filed a complaint with the Odorkor Police saying that the Al Ain striker raped and sodomized her earlier this year.
Sarah Kwabla alleges a two year affair with Gyan which has resulted in a pregnancy. The player admits having sexual relations with her, but is adamant that it was consensual.
Gyan also doubts the pregnancy claims and wants a paternity test done.
Pobee (below, pictured) stressed on the right thing being done: "Before something can be done, Ghana Football Association, has to do their things with rules and regulations so he should be summoned to the ethics committee of the GFA to find out what we are hearing from the public is true."
'Tainting the image'
Another vocal football commentator, Appiah Stadium does not want the GFA to investigate the Ghana captain first. He wants an immediate withdrawal of the captaincy due to the progressively negative news coming from the Gyan camp.
"The frequency with which Asamoah Gyan gets involved in scandal is worrying for the image of the captaincy and the Black Stars," the serial caller told Peace FM on Friday.
"Let's not forget Gyan's name was involved in the disappearance of [popular musician] Castro last year. Then there was the beating of that journalist. It will be prudent for us to give the captaincy to someone else free from scandal," Appiah noted.
Last September, it was alleged that thugs sent by Gyan's elder brother beat up Daniel Kenu, a reporter with the Daily Graphic newspaper. The Gyans denied allegations of wrongdoing.
Appiah Stadium went on to list the other scandals that he feels are inimical to the high of office Black Stars captain, stressing that "these are moral issues that must be taken seriously."
Official reaction
The GFA has not issued a statement on the latest happenings with the captain, but public pressure may cause them to.
Just before the African Cup this year, the FA were forced to caution midfielder Afriyie Acquah over the conduct of his wife, after videos of her alleging amorous affairs with FA officials spread on social media.
