Retiring ex-Ghana captain, Stephen Appiah, has revealed his only and biggest career regret.
The ex-Juventus midfielder will be having a testimonial game to mark the end to his envious playing times on June 27 after officially announcing his decision to hang his boots in January.
Appiah’s tenure as Black Stars captain saw Ghana qualify for their maiden Fifa World Cup at the senior level in Germany nine years ago. The ex-Hearts of Oak trainee led the Black Stars to an enviable round of 16 feat at first attempt and also led the team to a quarterfinals place at the South Africa 2010 World Cup.
Appiah however failed to win a trophy throughout his days as a Ghana national team player – a period in which he scored 14 goals in 67 appearances from 1995 to 2010.
“I’ve enjoyed my career. But one thing that makes me sad when I think about it is the fact that I’ve not won any trophy with the Black Stars," the 34-year-old said.
”But I don’t want to be selfish because it’s not every player that gets the chance to play for the national team or play at the World Cup.
“I don’t have any regrets in my career except not winning any trophy with the national team. It makes me sad when I think about it,” he emphasized.
Appiah’s testimonial on Saturday, June 27 in Accra is set to be graced by top football icons past and present like Roberto Baggio, Pavel Nedved, Emmanuel Adebayor, Nwankwo Kanu, Austin Okocha, Samuel Eto, Aaron Mokoena, Didier Drogba, Yaya Toure, George Weah and Sulley Muntari who will be facing the current Black Stars team.
