Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, 2008 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on the nation to give issues relating to the welfare and progress of the physically challenged the deserved attention.
He said everything should be done to help them become economically self-supporting and see themselves as important part of society. Nana Akufo-Addo said this in a speech read for him at the 34th Annual Charity Dinner of the Ghana National Trust Fund held at the Kumasi Club House, to raise money to support the disabled.
He criticized the situation where some children with disabilities were forced to stop schooling because of social barriers including discrimination.
They end up on the streets begging for money to survive, he said, adding that, that certainly must change. Nana Akufo-Addo suggested that all public buildings made provision for the disabled.
He appealed for more public support for the Ghana National Trust Fund to boost its activities and bring some comfort to people with physical disabilities.
He encouraged the disabled to take inspiration from Mr Emmanuel Owusu Yeboah, who though has no legs, won an international bicycle competition and adopted the "can do" spirit.
