Three Appeals Court judges nominated by President Mills for consideration to the Supreme Court have received the approval of the House.
Justices Benjamin Teiko Aryeetey, Suleiman Nasiru Gbadegbe and Vida Akoto Bamfo were vetted by Parliament’s Appointments Committee about a fortnight ago answering questions on capital punishment, the problem of remand prisoners, the law on causing financial loss and allegations of executive manipulation of the Judiciary.
Joy News Parliamentary Correspondent, Sammy Darko who covered the House’s approval on Friday, said their approval followed the Appointments Committee of Parliament’s presentation of its report on the vetting of the nominees.
He said however that the Minority side raised issues on the propriety of the nominations by the government to increase the size of the Supreme Court, arguing that by principle, the ruling National Democratic Congress objected vehemently while in opposition, to a similar move by former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
