The Ghanaian Community in the USA last week end was in joyful mood when the flamboyant Black Satellites distinguished themselves by beating "Soccer Giants" Brazil with 10 men to be the first African country to win the FIFA U-20 Trophy at the Cairo International Sports Stadium in Egypt.
In an exclusively telephone interview with this freelance journalist in the USA, Opanyin Kwaku Kyei of Bronx, wearing the colors of Ghana noted that the Ghana U-20 team has done a very good job by winning the Golden Trophy with 10 men and also breaking the jinx of the Brazilians who have denied Ghana's junior national team on one occasion of winning the trophy.
Mr. Seth Tony Osei-Bonsu of Denver-Colorado in a telephone interview disclosed that, the technical team, the management of the Black Satellites and the players have done well to uplift the confidence of Ghana soccer universally. This he claimed should be an inspiration to the Black Stars who qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa to win the trophy for the Nation.
Coach Sammy Adjei, the former captain of the Ghana U-20 also on his part sent a congratulatory message to the Black Satellites. He said by this achievement, the Satellites have shown that those countries considered as soccer powers are beatable.
The technical team did map out a perfect soccer strategy to let Dominic Adiyah to be the only player upfront and the goalkeeper also saved us with his magnificent saves from the spot kicks.
From Dallas Fort Worth, Mr. David Owusu aka "Mahonny" who could not hide his joy appealed to the GFA and the U-20 management team to do all that they can to keep the crop of players together for the Olympic games, since at times after a major tournament, the GFA and the management fail to keep players together and by so doing, we have to start every thing afresh to groom another set of players.
Another soccer fan from Woodbridge, Virginia, Mr. Frank Kwasi Barnie noted that the players have made Ghana and Africa proud by making sure that, the trophy did not leave the shores of Africa. Beating Soccer Power House like Brazil with ten men is no mean achievement.
Elder Kofi Adu Gyamfi of Cincinnati-Ohio, who organized a cocktail party at his house, said that he did fast and prayed to the Almighty Lord to help Ghana U-20 to win the trophy so that we can lift the face of Ghana soccer.
Though the Black Stars have qualified for the World Cup, he thinks that more trophies and laurels need to be won by the Ghana National teams. He urged the GFA to reward the players, and the technical team handsomely by honoring all the promises made. He said he is very glad that nobody is bringing ugly politics into this victory, {NO NPP AND NO NDC} but all the political parties realize that soccer was about Ghana and we should do well to support our national teams whenever they are competing since it is Ghana at stake.
He also suggested that a a bank account be opened for the national teams so that those who can donate some Dollars, Yens, Pound Sterling, Dutch Marks etc, to show appreciation for their efforts may do so.
Miss Edith Afari of Maryland doffed her hat for the excellent performance of the Satellites. She said by their excellent performance they brought smiles and pride to Africans. She said this is a precursor to what the world should expect at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
A former soccer administrator of North Carolina, Nana Kwaku Danso, talking with tears of joy noted that, the U-20 players have brought pride, glory and honor to Ghana and this a big challenge to the sports disciplines to live up to expectation, whenever they are representing the Nation.
