National Service personnel will soon be posted to farming communities to work as farm hands.
This was disclosed by the Executive Director of the National Service Secretariat Vincent Senam Kuagbenu who has in recent times been criticized for his managerial style.
Mr Kuagbenu told Joy News’ Stephen Anti the move is geared, not only at inculcating the spirit of love and volunteerism in the personnel, but for them to engage in “more productive ventures” which will ensure self sufficiency for the country.
In line with that aspiration, Mr Kuagbenu said agricultural lands have been procured for mango plantation and other crop production.
“As I speak to you now, we are acquiring about 20 hectares of land at Ejura and next year we are going into crop production. We must expand our facilities. We shouldn’t be importing food when we have an army of youth. Who should go into food crop production?” he quizzed.
He expressed regret over reports of service personnel “loitering” in offices because they have little or nothing to do.
Mr. Kuagbenu decried the level of indiscipline in the country and has hinted a month-long military training programme for service personnel.
“One of the programmes we are rolling out next year is that service personnel will undergo one month of military training. We think that the level of indiscipline in Ghana today is as a result of young men who are unable to understand issues of discipline,” he said.
He denied accusations that he is autocratic saying his accusers are only resisting change and restructuring.
