Turn away from politics of personality cults

A legal practitioner, Nana Addo-Aikins, has observed that the proclamation of 21st September, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah's Birth Day, as Founder's Day is appropriate. He said arguments over placement of apostrophes in the expression "Founder's Day" therefore deserves to be dropped since they only appear to be a waste of time, unnecessary and irrelevant to the nature and extent of the task ahead of the nation. Speaking to the GNA in Koforidua, Nana Addo-Aikins said objectively, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah's immense contribution towards Ghana's independence struggle was not debatable. He said "while Dr Nkrumah's vision was most articulate, appropriate and relevant in content and direction to the national liberation struggle, his strategy, fortitude and commitment in relentless fight he put up against internal and external forces to enable Ghana gain political independence are also unsurpassed and most commendable". Nana Addo-Aikins said Dr Nkrumah had the ability to sway the masses behind him to fight the cause of the nation which also constituted an impetus and a drive in Ghana's independence struggle. He added that Dr Nkrumah deserves to be called the "Founder of the Nation Ghana" and thanked President John Evans Atta Mills for his wisdom, sincerity, foresight and selflessness in declaring the Day. He noted it is time for the country to turn away from old time politics of personality cults and divisive tendencies and rather turn to a "New Politics" of consensus building and the creation of new ideas. He said "New concepts and politics based on principles are what Ghana needs for true nation building". Nana Addo-Aikins said the Nkrumah and Danquah-Busia political divide in Ghana politics which appears outmoded and ideologically incompatible with the demands of time equally appear counterproductive and destructive to the national call for peace, unity and true development. He said formulation of new political traditions by politicians and nation builders as part of Ghana's on-going process of national transformation is what is needed now for advancement of the nation and its people.
