Football stars across the globe have pledged their support towards the success of the 1-Goal Project.
The 1-Goal Project is aimed at ensuring that 75 million children around the world half of whom are in Africa get access to quality education through the provision of classrooms and teachers.
The footballers include members of the senior national team, the Black Stars of Ghana led by skipper Stephen Appiah, John Paintsil and Laryea Kingston.
They were joined by former members of the Black Stars; Charles Kwabena Akunnor, Yaw Preko, Nii Odartey Lamptey, Maxwell Konadu, Augustine Arhinful and 1-Goal Ghana Ambassador Tony Baffoe.
Also on board are international stars like Nicholas Anelka, Craig Bellamy, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick, Ivan Corduba, Marcus Gayle, Thierry Henry, Michael Owen, Van Persie, Kanu Nwankwo, Kolo Toure and John Utaka.
The President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills announced his support for the project at a special launch of the Project at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra on Tuesday, which was attended by over 200 school children drawn from various schools in the Accra Metropolis and stakeholders in Ghana football.
The President said, “We recognize that there is always more to do around the world and here at home. I therefore pledge today that by the time the whistle blows to begin the first match of the 2010 World Cup, every child in Ghana will have a text book in their hands, 1-Goal, 1-Child and 1-Textbook”.
The Project has also been joined by seven heads of state including President Mills and two international personalities who have agreed to spend the next two years working toward a break through on global education funding and make education the legacy of the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The world leaders have agreed to meet on the eve of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa for a summit on education.
The list includes Prime Minister Gordon Brown of the United Kingdom, Kevin Rudd of Australia, Balkenede of the Netherlands, Zapatero of Spain, Queen Rania al Abdullah of Jordan, Ban Ki Moon, United Nations Secretary General and FIFA President Sepp Blatter.
