Black Satellites Captain, Andre Ayew hopes scoring against England will let his critics in Ghana eat humble pie ahead of a dicey last Group game with Uruguay at the Ismialia Stadium on Friday.
Ayew’s talent was on display against England when the skipper exploded from an unusual right flank to launch a left footer.
He had advanced majestically at goal; controlled well in-between two markers and moved into an acute space with three players closing in before unleashing a masterpiece just outside the area to the tightest of angles at the first post to render dived goalkeeper Elliott Parish clueless to give Ghana the second of the four goals bagged.
He told GNA Sports: “Am very happy I scored because back home, a lot of people talk so much about me which I don’t think is fair to me and I hope now they will start thinking again because all I ever want to do is represent my country and do my best.”
Ayew is preoccupied with working harder to change people’s perception on his capabilities but also insists that: “dying a little more for the team’s collective progress remains the strongest of my desires.”
“Yes I want to do well and change people’s mind but I also think...of the team’s interest and I want to do my best in a manner that propels the entire team.”
The captain told GNA Sports the team has worked hard enough to improve on their usual slow start to games; reckoning that at the next stage of the competition, conceding an early goal or beginning sluggishly could spell doom for their cause.
“We have noticed that we settle late in a game and it is a habit that we have worked on to overcome. Whether we don’t warm up well enough, whatever it is, we must figure it out before going to the next stage,” he said.
“The stakes at the next stage are so high that one cannot afford to start slow or concede an early goal. It means burning a lot of energy because hopefully, every team at that level will be very strong,” Dede added.
