Bayern Munich’s Champions League hopes have suffered a huge setback with the news that Arjen Robben will miss the rest of the season due to a torn calf muscle, while Robert Lewandowski has broken his upper jaw and nose.
Robben made his comeback from injury for Bayern in Tuesday night’s penalty shoot-out defeat to Borussia Dortmund but lasted only 16 minutes before being forced to come off.
Medical tests have confirmed that the Netherlands international, who is Bayern’s top scorer in the Bundesliga this season with 17 goals, has torn a calf muscle and will not play again this season.
Lewandowski, who scored Bayern's goal against his former club, was clattered into by keeper Mitchell Langerak and was taken to hospital. Tests have revealed a break to his jaw and nose as well as concussion.
Bayern have not said how long they will be without the Polish striker for, but the club said on their Twitter account that "it doesn't get much worse than that." Lewandowski still has some hope that he might feature at Camp Nou on May 6.
Bayern prepared their fans for the worst with tweets on Wednesday morning that said.
"Arjen Robben has a tear in his left calf muscle. His season is over. Robert Lewandowski has broken his upper jaw and his nose. He also has a concussion. It doesn't get much worse than that."
OPINION
News of the injury to Lewandowski was bad enough given his excellent recent form, but the real killer blow is the loss of Robben for the rest of the season.
His return had seemed to coincide perfectly with the semi-final against Barcelona but now Bayern will be without their best player and most dangerous forward for the biggest game of the season.
Franck Ribery is also out with an ankle injury and Bayern will be severely depleted when they take on Pep Guardiola's former side, who must be big favourites now.
If only Bayern Munich had a world renowned doctor at their disposal.
But Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt's contentious exit earlier this month has left them without the services as the man known as a 'miracle doctor' just when they need him the most. Make no mistake, this is one of the gravest crises in Guardiola's coaching career.
