The Committee for Joint Action (CJA) is baring its teeth against government over what it describes as poor handling of the School Feeding Programme.
According to the group, the programme’s implementation is growing from bad to worse under the reign of President John Evans Atta Mills and has called on government to take immediate measures to salvage it.
At a press conference in Accra on Thursday, a leading member of the group, Kwesi Adu called for a complete overhaul of the programme.
“The CJA is of the firm view that the welfare and well being of the school children be the guiding principle behind any action about the programme.
“There must be a complete overhaul which will refocus the programme to meet the needs of the children,” he said.
He advocated for the formation of a strong and committed monitoring team to among other things; “ensure consistent, rigorous and open approach to performance management and the assessment of caterers.
“Ensure the caterers observe strict health and safety rules in the preparation of food.
“Ensure equitable allocation of schools to the caterers.”
“That each caterer has the capability to deliver the service. It his only under these conditions that the committee will accept the termination of contracts by caterers, he added.
The pressure group he maintained objects vehemently to any attempt to bring back, Dr. Amoako Tuffuor to run the programme.
The former Executive Director of the programme has made overtures to government for a possible comeback, but Mr Adu insists that will be a disaster.
He accused Dr. Tuffuor of incompetence in the handling of the programme, citing corruption, graft and unwholesome food production for the children.
"It is when people begin to mess up that people like Amoako Tuffuor has a voice," he said.
