The Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), Ban Ki-Moon, has commended Ghana for her leadership role in promoting democracy in Africa.
In a high-level one-on-one bilateral meeting with the Ghana’s president, John Evans Atta Mills, the UN boss also acknowledged the kind of professionalism exhibited by the country’s officers at peacekeeping missions and attributed that to solid democratic structures and institutions.
President Mills is in New York attending the on-going 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly. He is expected to address the General Assembly on Thursday, September 24, 2009.
Joy News’ Stephen Anti reports that President Mills in reaction thanked the UN Secretary General for the opportunity to meet with him.
He said the successes Ghana has achieved are not due to the effort of one particular person, adding, Ghanaians in general should be credited for being committed to the rule of law.
According to Koku Anyidoho, Director of Communication at the Presidency, President Mills, together with presidents of countries that contribute troops to UN Peacekeeping operations, will hold discussions with President Barack Obama later Wednesday.
The President is also expected to meet with British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown and Mr. Robert Zoellick, President of the World Bank Group, for a discussion on “Investing in our Common Future: Healthy Women, Healthy Children”.
