Family of man shot by police demands justice

The family of 21-year-old Kwesi Baah, who was shot dead on Monday by a police officer in Accra, is demanding justice. Sources say Kwesi was shot by the police after several attempts to get him to park an unregistered car failed. The police reportedly subjected him to a hot chase and eventually accosted him near the City Lights junction, at Kokomlemle in Accra. Witnesses say although the deceased had surrendered with his arms raised, one of the police officers gunned him down from a distance. Kwesi’s girlfriend, who gave her name as Priscilla, says she was with the deceased during the shooting. She told Joy News the police threatened to kill her when she made an attempt to attend to the deceased, who is said to have bled for over 30 minutes unattended to. Mother of the deceased, Auntie Ama, has however dismissed suggestions by the police that Kwesi was an armed robber, stressing, her son was a law-abiding citizen. The tragedy follows other police mistaken shootouts that have left several persons dead in Accra. The police are yet to conduct investigation into the matter but there are concerns the case would just add up to the long list of alleged police crimes still under investigations by the police administration.
