Police officers from the Drug and Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU), under the Sekondi Command of the Ghana Police Service (GPS) at the weekend clashed with some perceived 'wee' smokers at Amanful, a suburb of Takoradi, when the former raided the area to arrest the drug peddlers.
The police officers, who undertook the unannounced swoop in a commercial cab, eventually managed to arrest the ringleader of the drug peddlers, after a fierce struggle.
The drug peddlers, however, refused to allow the police officers to take their leader away, 'as they demanded for his immediate release.
After realizing that the police men were not prepared to listen to them, the perceived drug peddlers re-grouped and launched a counter-attack on the police, and succeeded in freeing their leader from the grip of the police. They also vandalized the commercial car the police officers were using in their operation.
Four of the police officers sustained head injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
ASP Basintale, the Commander in charge of the Drug and Law Enforcement Unit of the Police Service, who confirmed the story in a telephone interview, added that the four police officers who sustained the injuries have been treated and discharged.
According to him, the police have re-arrested the ringleader.
ASP Basintale told The Chronicle that the drug peddlers blocked the road to prevent the police from taking their leader away, which they succeeded in doing, but the police re-strategized and the leader was re-arrested.
He stated that the police had mounted a search for the arrest of the drug peddlers.
According to him, when the ringleader, who he refused to identify for security reasons, was arrested, the police found illegal drugs on him, and that they would use it to make a case against him in court.
