Sixteen people have been confirmed dead by hospital authorities at the Central Regional Hospital, Cape Coast, after two vehicles collided on Monday dawn.
According to the Joy FM’s Central Regional correspondent, Richard Kojo Nyarko, the dead include two minors – below two years.
The accident happened at about 2am when an articulator truck from Elmina and a fully loaded 207 Benz bus travelling from Takoradi collided at Komenda in the Central Region.
According to some of the survivors, the accident is suspected to have been caused by a broken back axle of the Benz bus that caused their drivers to lose control of the steering wheel, forcing the vehicle to swing sideways.
Three of the victims died on the spot and the rest died at the hospital.
About seven of the victims, he says, are responding to treatment when he visited the hospital.
The hospital officials are calling on the public to help identify the parent of a toddler who survived with a swollen eye.
A number of family members and sympathizers have thronged the regional hospital to identify their relatives involved in the accident.
Tetteh Quarshie, director of the hospital, said his outfit is working hard to treat the victims and refer those they cannot handle.
