Police in Bawku have mounted a search for a gunman who allegedly shot and killed two men in the municipality on Thursday.
The assailant gunned down a 26-year-old shop keeper in the head and an officer from the Ghana National Fire Service.
Two other victims who sustained gunshot wounds are said to be receiving treatment at the Bawku Hospital.
Upper East Regional Minister, Mark Wayongo in an interview with Joy News' Matilda Asante Asiedu said the area of the shooting has been cordoned-off with over 33 suspects arrested for screening.
He lamented the seeming lack of cooperation from residents in the municipality, who he said have not assisted the police enough to apprehend the culprit.
As a result the police have no option than to engage in indiscriminate arrests in order to conduct thorough investigation.
The Regional Minister described the new incidents as “disturbing” having breached the relative peace the area has enjoyed in recent times.
He said the security personnel were yet to ascertain the reason for Thursday’s shooting incident, and called on the residents to exercise restraint and give the security institutions the time to investigate the incidents.
Bawku has been notorious for recurring ethnic, chieftaincy and political violence.
