The Publicity Secretary of the Convention Peoples’ Party (CPP), Mr Korsi Dede has described as unfortunate reports that the Mills administration intends to divest some state companies.
He said the move smacked of hypocrisy.
Speaking to Joy FM’s Super Morning Show hosted by Evans Mensah, Korsi Dede said whiles the president in opposition was quoted by the media as saying Ghanaians were capable of managing their institutions and companies, he, as a president has turned round to condone exactly what he kicked against.
He asked what real benefits accrued to Ghanaians from such divestitures.
Mr Dede also lambasted the Trades Union Congress (TUC) for failing to adequately inform their members at Vodafone on the implications of the purchase agreement when erstwhile Ghana Telecom was being divested to Vodafone.
He said the quagmire in which workers of Vodafone have found themselves now would have been avoided if the TUC had been more proactive.
The General Secretary of the TUC, MR Kofi Asamoa, however disagreed with Mr Dede, saying the structure of TUC barred the Union from wading into the Vodafone saga unless it was formally called on to do so.
He said following a complaint by the Communications Workers Union, the TUC is intervening in the redundancy plans currently being pursued by Vodafone. The company is said to be considering laying off about 950 workers compulsorily as part of a restructuring process.
According to him, the approach adopted by Vodafone was wrong because it violated rules of the collective bargaining agreement.
He said the rules dictate that any company wishing to undertake restructuring that could lead to redundancy, must involve the workers’ union in the discussions.
Sidestepping the workers’ union and trying to coerce individual workers to accept the redundancy package as adopted by Vodafone is illegal.
