The Attorney-General has filed an affidavit at an Accra High Court to challenge claims by counsels for New Patriotic Party Greater Accra Chairman, Sammy Crabbe, that they were denied access to their client during a Bureau of National Investigation interrogation.
The lawyers including Yoni Kulendi and John Ndebugri have publicly complained about the issue.
But the A-G insists officials of the BNI allowed lawyers access to their clients during interrogations.
But counsel for Sammy Crabbe, Kwame Boateng, says he will prove to the court his client’s constitutional rights were abused.
“This sounds a bit odd; I would want the court therefore to take evidence on this man. We’ll have to bring Sammy Crabbe into the box, we’ll have to bring the Director of BNI into the box to show and to prove because there are other witnesses apart from me,” he stressed.
Sammy Crabbe has sued the director of the BNI and the Attorney General Betty Mould Iddrisu.
The NPP Regional Chairman claims he was threatened with arrest and detention when he appeared before the BNI for a ‘friendly conversation’.
According to him, this was after he insisted he should be questioned in the presence of his lawyer.
Mr Crabbe contends that the BNI violated his rights as a citizen of Ghana when he was denied the opportunity of having his lawyer present when he reported at the bureau.
According to him the situation amounts to abuse of office and a denial of due process.
