An Accra Human Rights Court is expected to hear a case of human rights abuse against the Bureau of National Investigations brought by the opposition New Patriotic Party’s Greater Accra chairman.
Sammy Crabbe has sued the director of the BNI and the Attorney General Betty Mould Iddrisu.
The NPP Regional Chairman claims he was threatened with arrest and detention when he appeared before the BNI for a ‘friendly conversation’.
According to him, this was after he insisted he should be questioned in the presence of his lawyer.
Mr Crabbe contends that the BNI violated his rights as a citizen of Ghana when he was denied the opportunity of having his lawyer present when he reported at the Bureau.
According to him the situation amounts to abuse of office and a denial of due process.
“It is unconstitutional and illegal for anyone to deny anybody they’ve arrested access to their lawyer,” he told Joy FM’s Sammy Darko.
Mr Crabbe said he would be seeking a perpetual injunction from the courts to get the BNI to respect the above constitutional requirement.
When the case was first heard on the June 15, the Attorney-General failed to show up.
