Boris Becker has apologised after being spotted at last night’s Champions League tie at Stamford Bridge wearing a scarf bearing the name of Chelsea’s most notorious hooligan firm.
Becker was photographed standing in a VIP box with a Chelsea Headhunters scarf draped around his shoulders, causing several onlookers to question his choice of attire.
The Headhunters, prominent in football hooliganism’s salad days of the 1970s and 80s, were once famously infiltrated by investigative reporter Donal MacIntyre for a documentary later screened by the BBC.
Alas, it all turned out to be a big misunderstanding, with Becker admitting his football scarf was a few years old and that he was completely oblivious as to its connotations.
“I did not know that. I bought it years ago at a booth outside the stadium,” the former Wimbledon champion told Bild.
“I am the last person to support hooligans.”
Well, that’s that cleared up then, though why nobody at the Bridge has ever pointed it out to him is a bit of a mystery.
