More electoral areas necessary-EC

The Electoral Commission of Ghana Intends to demarcate more Electoral areas after the 2010 Population and Housing Census. The EC says it has received several petitions from the length and breadth of the country to demarcate current electoral areas to meet the increase in population. In an interview with Citi news on Tuesday, the Acting Public Relations Director of the Electoral Commission, Mr. Christian Owusu Pari said, as much as the EC will like to re-demarcate the current electoral areas, a lot will depend on the outcome of the 2010 Population Census and also if the Budget will be able to support its successful implementation. “We must wait for the outcome of the population census and also consultations must be made first to see if the budgetary allocations will be enough to support the re-demarcations,” he added. Even though there has been the need for the additional electoral areas and re-demarcation of current areas, Mr. Pari said the EC cannot take the decision on its own since it will take Government's assistance for its full implementation. When asked if the EC has finally settled on a date for the Akwatia elections, Mr. Owusu said, the EC is yet to come out with a date for the re-run of the elections but he hopes that a final decision and time table will be known by the close of the week. The Electoral Commission will only run elections in only six constituencies in Akwatia where there were electoral irregularities. The High court last week threw out a case filed by Baba Jamal of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for a total re-run of the elections in Akwatia. He also made it known that no final conclusion has been made with respect to revocation of the license of non active political parties in the country and the EC will take a final decision on that very soon.
