Civil servants compete for contracts

The Association of Road Contractors in Ghana (ARG) has called on the government to compel civil servants who own construction companies or firms to resign as civil servants. The association observed that those civil servants-cum-contractors were taking undue advantage of their relationship with power brokers to win more contracts. “They corrupt or induce politicians with gifts in exchange for contracts,” they alleged. Some civil servants in Ghana own construction firms, a situation the road contractors said is unacceptable and need to be checked. The situation, according to them, creates a conflict of interest, encourages bribery and corruption, abuse of positions and office among other things and should be stopped. The chairman of the association, Alhaji Sharif Mahama, made the call when the members held a meeting with the Northern Regional Minister, Stephen Nayina, and his deputy Moses Mabinga in his office. The meeting was to formally welcome the minister and his deputy to the region and also to deliberate on issues affecting construction in the region, at which the contractors pledged their support the new administration.
