The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider the name of Tamale International Airport, proposing it be renamed Gbewaa International Airport.
This follows the recent decision to rename the airport to Yakubu Tali International Airport in the lead-up to the 2024 general elections, a move made without his approval.
“In consultation with the Nayiri and the Bimbilla Naa, we want the airport to be renamed Gbewaa International Airport,” Yaa Naa Abukari II conveyed, through a speech delivered on his behalf by Zangbalin Lana, Dr. Yakubu Mahama, during the President’s thank-you tour of the Northern Region on Saturday, 22nd March.
In addition to this request for a name change, the Yaa Naa also urged the government to prioritise and begin Phase Three of the Tamale International Airport project, which has been stalled after the completion of Phase Two.
He stressed the need for the airport’s expansion to ensure it can effectively meet the growing needs of the region.
Additionally, he called on the government to revive and complete outstanding E-Blocks in the region to improve educational infrastructure.
