The Deputy General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has emphasised that NPP members are willing to go through any legal process that may arise, but will not tolerate what he described as "persecution".

During a press briefing on Wednesday, February 12, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta as a fugitive.

According to the OSP, he is under investigation for his alleged involvement in several financial irregularities, including the Strategic Mobilization Limited-GRA contract, the termination of the ECG-BXC contract, National Cathedral payments, the ambulance procurement contract, as well as the utilisation of the Tax Refund Account.

Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse Show on Monday, March 17, Mohammed stressed that the claims levelled against Mr Ofori-Atta remain merely allegations and not facts, underlining that the former Finance Minister should not be presumed guilty.

“Besides, all the matters that have been pulled out against Ken Ofori-Atta are allegations, not established allegations. So, you cannot say that Mr Ofori-Atta is corrupt. We, as a party, are prepared for any situation. Every member of the New Patriotic Party is prepared to go through any prosecution, not persecution," he noted

He explained that the NPP would stand firmly behind Ofori-Atta throughout any legal proceedings.

“We will follow Mr Kenneth Ofori-Atta, we are behind him until he is proven guilty or otherwise,” Mohammed added.

The Deputy General Secretary emphasised the party’s commitment to respecting the legal process, highlighting that Ofori-Atta’s dignity must be upheld during the ongoing investigations.

“Let him go through the process,” Mohammed urged. “We expect his dignity to be respected, and we expect him to be given the full rigours of the law.”

He further pointed out that the Chairman of the NPP’s legal counsel, who is also serving as Mr Ofori-Atta’s personal lawyer, reflects the party's full backing of the embattled minister.

"And that is why the Chairman of the legal counsel of the New Patriotic Party is the counsel to Ken Ofori Atta," he said.
