An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced an unemployed man to two years imprisonment for stealing quantities of electrical cables at La in Accra.
Ebenezer Tetteh is said to have stolen the cables, the value and owner of which were not known to the court.
Charged with stealing, Tetteh pleaded guilty with explanation.
The court, presided over by Mrs Sedinam Awo Kwadam, convicted Tetteh on his own plea.
According to the court, his explanation confirmed his plea of guilt.
The court ordered that the stolen cable should be in the custody of the police until claimed by the owner who could prove ownership.
Prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Daniel Ofori Appiah, told the court that the complainant and witnesses in the case were police personnel from the Cantonment Division, while the accused resided at Apapa, a suburb of La in Accra.
On February 20, 2025, at about 0100 hours, the complainant and witnesses, then among police patrol team, were on their normal night patrol duties when they stopped a taxicab at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel area.
The team conducted routine checks and in the process of searching the car, they found quantities of electrical cables, which the accused, then on board, claimed belonged to him.
Prosecution held that the police suspected foul play after interrogations as the accused failed to convince them that the cables belonged to him, hence he was sent to the La Police Station with the cables.
While investigations were ongoing, the accused admitted having stolen the electrical cables but was yet to lead the police to where he stole them.
The police were making efforts to locate the owner, it said.
