Former Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated his call for African nations to prioritise self-reliance over dependence on foreign aid.

Speaking at the launch of former Nigerian President Ibrahim Babangida’s autobiography, he emphasised the need for leaders across the continent to foster strategic partnerships and implement sustainable economic policies.

According to him, Africa must look inward for solutions to its development challenges rather than continually seeking external assistance.

Addressing the audience, Mr Akufo-Addo criticised the over-reliance on donor support, stating that no country has ever achieved lasting prosperity through handouts.

“Too often, African nations look outside for solutions when the answers lie within our own borders,” he remarked.

He further warned that foreign aid often comes with conditions that may not align with Africa’s long-term interests, stressing the importance of investing in key sectors such as agriculture, industry, and human capital.

Mr Akufo-Addo urged African governments to maximise intra-continental trade and economic cooperation as a means of securing sustainable growth. He identified the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) as a game-changer in unlocking Africa’s economic potential.

“If we are to move beyond our historical economic challenges, we must fully embrace the AfCFTA. Removing trade barriers and fostering economic integration will create the conditions necessary for sustainable growth,” he asserted.

Turning his focus to regional collaboration, Mr Akufo-Addo highlighted the importance of strengthening ties between Ghana and Nigeria as a model for broader economic progress in West Africa.

He called for deeper cooperation in trade, energy, and technology, stating that both countries had a shared responsibility to lead the region towards economic independence.

“Ghana and Nigeria have demonstrated that when we work together, we achieve more. We must move beyond competition and embrace cooperation for the greater good of our people,” he noted.

In his concluding remarks, Akufo-Addo urged African leaders to take decisive action in shaping the continent’s future. He insisted that with the right leadership, strategic investments, and a strong commitment to regional cooperation, Africa could achieve true self-sufficiency.

“Africa’s future is in our hands. With visionary leadership and a commitment to collaboration, we can build a continent that is prosperous, self-reliant, and respected globally,” he stated.
