Ghana's sprinter and 100m record holder, Benjamin Azamati has made a cash donation of 10,000 Ghana cedis to the victims of the devastating fire that decimated properties at the Kantamanto Market.
Traders were left crestfallen and in despair on January, 1, 2025, in Accra's Central Business District when hundreds of people were affected and 14 others seriously injured due to the fire outbreak.
As a result, Azamati showed his act of benevolence with a financial support in an attempt to alleviate the burden of those affected.
In a statement released, he said: "With a heavy heart, I acknowledge the devastating fire that has ravaged our community. I stand with every individual and family affected; you are not alone"
"As an athlete, I know the value of opportunities to chase my dreams and to achieve success. But I believe true greatness lies in using our blessings to uplift others.
"Today, I give back to those who need it most, donating this sum as a gesture of solidarity, hope and compassion. This is my birthday wish for all the mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters affected by this disaster.
Kantamanto market manager, Adutwum Atta Manu also told JoySports: "This [fire] is too devastating, is extraordinary.
"We want to thank God for the life of Benjamin Azamati for his sense of concern. We appreciate it and we are so grateful. It [Money] will help us in a long way."
Other sporting personalities are also encouraged to show support for the victims.
Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has issued directives to tighten security around major markets nationwide to address the recent spate of market fires.
