President John Mahama has announced plans to uncap the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) levy in the upcoming budget to improve healthcare access across Ghana.
Delivering an address at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service on 12 January 2025, held at the Ohene Konadu Auditorium, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), President Mahama reaffirmed his administration's commitment to equitable and accessible healthcare for all citizens.
"We are determined to prioritise healthcare to ensure that every Ghanaian, regardless of their location or economic standing, has access to quality medical services," he declared.
"To this end, we will take stock of all uncompleted health facilities and develop a comprehensive plan to complete and operationalise them."
The President highlighted that uncapping the NHIS levy would provide the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) with the necessary resources to meet its financial obligations to healthcare providers.
This, he noted, would strengthen the healthcare system and ensure timely reimbursements for services rendered.
"This measure is essential to guarantee that the NHIA can adequately fund healthcare providers for the services they deliver to the public," President Mahama explained.
He emphasised that his government is committed to creating a robust healthcare system that leaves no Ghanaian behind.
