President John Mahama has called for an urgent investigation into the tragic death of Ghanaian citizens during the 2020 and 2024 general elections.

These fatalities, which occurred across various regions of the country, have raised serious concerns about the integrity of the electoral process and the safety of voters and other participants.

The request, addressed to the Ministry of the Interior and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), was made by President Mahama.

He emphasized that the incidents, which left families in mourning and the nation deeply divided, must be thoroughly investigated to ensure justice is served.

President Mahama's request includes several key recommendations to ensure a comprehensive and transparent investigation:

  1. Establishment of a Dedicated Investigative Taskforce: He has requested the formation of a special task force within the CID that will focus exclusively on these cases to ensure they are handled with the necessary attention and expertise.
  2. Collaboration with Witnesses and Families: The investigation should involve thorough interviews with eyewitnesses, victims' families, and any other individuals who might provide important information related to the incidents.
  3. Review of Electoral Security Arrangements: President Mahama also called for a review of the role and conduct of security personnel at the affected polling stations to determine their involvement, oversight, or any misconduct.
  4. Use of Forensic Evidence: He suggested employing advanced forensic techniques to examine physical evidence from crime scenes, such as bullet casings, weapons, and other materials that could provide critical insights.
  5. Collaboration with Electoral and Civic Bodies: President Mahama urged the CID to work with the Electoral Commission and other relevant bodies to review electoral reports from the 2020 and 2024 elections to better understand the broader context surrounding the deaths.

In addition, President Mahama asked for periodic updates on the progress of the investigation, expressing the importance of maintaining public trust through transparency.

He also offered his full support to the CID and other relevant authorities, should they require further assistance or information.

"We trust the CID's competence in handling this matter and are hopeful that their efforts will uncover the truth and ensure that those responsible for these tragic events are held accountable," the statement read.
