The Islamic Foundation for Humanitarian Services, a Muslim community organisation, has constructed a 50-bed capacity maternity block for the Ejura Government Hospital. The new facility, which has been completed with modern amenities, includes a fully equipped theatre, a labour ward, a recovery ward, nurses' rooms, administrative offices, and additional auxiliary facilities.
In partnership with the Ejura Traditional Council, the new maternity block is expected to alleviate the pressure on the hospital's existing maternity unit, which has been facing severe overcrowding.
The project, which was initiated about 14 years ago to address the hospital’s limited infrastructure, came to a standstill in 2019, with only interior furnishing and the installation of equipment left to finalise the building.
The youth group, upon visiting the Ejura Government Hospital, observed the severe overcrowding in the maternity ward, which was making it increasingly difficult to provide quality healthcare to the mothers.
The challenging conditions at the hospital motivated the group to take action, leading them to appeal to the Ejura Traditional Council for land to build a new maternity block. Their observations highlighted the urgent need for expanded facilities, prompting them to start the project that would help alleviate the strain on the existing maternity unit and ensure better healthcare for the community.
The chairman of the youth group, Mohammed Naziru Tahiru, had appealed to development partners and donors for support in completing the final stages of the project.
"We are calling on development partners to assist in bringing this project to fruition so that it can start serving the community," said Naziru in April 2019 when JoyNews visited the facility
The group was motivated by their strong relationship with the hospital and was able to raise an initial GH₵ 10,000 to kick-start the project. Over time, other organisations joined the effort to contribute to its progress.
Today, the youth group is excited that their hard work has paid off, and the new maternity facility is set to become operational, much to the admiration of the community.
The chairman, Mr Tahiru, expressed his pride in the project's progress, stating that "a nation cannot be built by one person," emphasising the importance of collective effort in addressing critical issues.
He added that the group’s commitment doesn’t end with the maternity block. "We will not leave it here. We look forward to constructing a befitting emergency unit for the hospital," he said, signaling the group’s ongoing dedication to improving healthcare infrastructure in the area.
The Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Dr. Emmanuel Amoah Aboagye, commended the youth group for their selfless service to humanity, and dedication to saving lives and providing quality healthcare.
"To us, today is an exciting day," Dr Aboagye said, expressing his gratitude for the completion of the maternity block. He also called on other individuals and organisations to support the hospital by donating equipment, urging them to help fully equip the facility so it can operate at its full potential and meet the healthcare needs of the community.
